Nigeria Plans New Pay Increase for Soldiers, Says Minister

On Monday in Abuja, Defence Minister Musa announced that the Federal Government is planning another pay increase for soldiers as part of efforts to enhance the welfare of Armed Forces members. Previously, soldiers' earnings were raised from approximately ₦49,000 to ₦100,000, a change that was criticized for not adequately addressing living expenses amid inflation.

Musa acknowledged that while the increase was significant, Nigeria's high inflation has diminished its real value. He stated that the government is committed to further salary reviews to align with economic realities.

Musa emphasized the sacrifices made by military personnel, who often face complex security challenges and long separations from their families. He linked the planned pay rise to the need for troop welfare, asserting that the effectiveness of the Armed Forces depends on the stability of military families.

The event was organized by the Ministry of Defence in collaboration with the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria, focusing on entrepreneurship for military families.
