Opposition Unity Crucial for 2027 Election, Says Lukman

Salihu Lukman, a former National Vice-Chairman (North-West) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), emphasized the necessity for opposition parties to unite to effectively challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election. He pointed to the recent Osun State governorship election, where Governor Ademola Adeleke defeated APC candidate Bola Oyebamiji, as evidence that a united opposition can succeed.

Lukman argued that the opposition has significant popular support but is hindered by fragmentation and competing interests. He urged opposition leaders to prioritize national interest over personal ambitions, advocating for the same level of compromise that led to the Osun election outcome.

Lukman's comments come amid efforts to form a coalition among opposition parties, despite his recent suspension from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) due to disagreements with former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai. He expressed concerns that internal conflicts could jeopardize the coalition's effectiveness in presenting a credible challenge in 2027.
