WhatsApp Introduces Usernames for Enhanced Privacy

WhatsApp, owned by Meta, is set to implement a new feature allowing users to create unique usernames, eliminating the need to share phone numbers for messaging. This update aims to enhance privacy, particularly in large group chats, where users will no longer have to automatically share their phone numbers.

The company stated that users will need to know the exact username of their contacts, as there will be no directory or suggestions available. The rollout of this feature will occur gradually worldwide, with users being notified when it becomes available in their respective countries.

Additionally, small business creators will have the opportunity to claim WhatsApp usernames, similar to the existing systems on other Meta platforms like Facebook and Instagram. Meta claims that WhatsApp has approximately three billion users globally, indicating a significant potential impact on user interactions.
