Prof Isa Yelwa Resigns as ATBU Chief Imam Over Mosque Issue

Prof Isa Yelwa announced his resignation as Chief Imam of ATBU during a Friday sermon on 11th Muharram, citing the university management's approval for the Tijjaniyyah sect to construct a mosque on campus. He expressed concerns that this decision could lead to divisions among Muslim students, as it favored one sect over others, including the Qadiriyyah and Izala groups.

Yelwa criticized the lack of consultation regarding the approval and stated that he felt the unity built among different sects within the university community was at risk. He emphasized that he would not return to his position until the approval was reversed and noted that he had served as Chief Imam for 17 years.

Zailani Bappa, the university director, defended the decision, stating it followed due process and did not violate any laws. He explained that the university accommodates different Muslim groups and promotes peaceful coexistence among them.
