Atiku Abubakar Promises to Restore Petrol Subsidy in 2027

Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), announced his intention to restore the petrol subsidy if he wins the 2027 general election. During a Hausa-language interview on a PAP programme, Abubakar stated that the removal of the subsidy has not led to better living conditions for Nigerians.

He initially did not oppose the subsidy removal but has since changed his stance, questioning the whereabouts of the funds that were supposed to improve public services. Abubakar emphasized that his administration would not only restore the subsidy but also pursue individuals accused of misappropriating subsidy funds.

He highlighted that the resources previously allocated for petrol subsidies could have been redirected to enhance healthcare, education, security, and youth empowerment. His comments followed a statement from the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, who reported that the government's economic reforms, including subsidy removal, generated an estimated N15.8 trillion in savings from June 2023 to December 2025.
