Nigeria Urged to Establish Senior Citizens Care Services

Dr. Jerom Audojo Agi, founder and president of the Ojon Foundation, argues for the urgent establishment of Senior Citizens Centres and home care services across Nigeria.

He highlights the demographic transition leading to a growing elderly population, which faces serious challenges such as chronic illnesses, social isolation, and inadequate healthcare. Traditional family structures, which have historically supported older adults, are weakening due to urban migration and economic pressures.

Agi proposes a national network of centres that would serve as hubs for healthcare, social engagement, and rehabilitation services, allowing elderly citizens to receive professional care while maintaining family connections. He emphasizes that this initiative should not replace familial care but rather enhance it, preserving cultural values and dignity.

The proposal includes a model combining healthcare support with daily assistance, aiming to improve the quality of life for seniors, create jobs, and stimulate economic activity. Agi calls for public-private partnerships and community involvement to ensure sustainable access to elder care.
