Tinubu Initiates Lagos-Calabar Highway Construction

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is overseeing the construction of a highway connecting Calabar and Lagos, which is viewed as a significant political, historical, and economic initiative. The highway serves as an acknowledgment of Calabar's historical importance, particularly as it was historically overlooked in transportation infrastructure, lacking a railway system that was established in 1891 between Lagos and Ibadan.

The Lagos/Calabar railway line project was initially conceived during Goodluck Jonathan's presidency in 2014 but has not been realized. The British colonial administration moved Nigeria's administrative headquarters from Calabar to Lagos in 1914, marking a shift in the nation's capital.

Calabar, recognized for its rich history and cultural heritage, is described as a "living museum" of Nigeria's past. The construction of the highway is seen as a form of compensation for the historical neglect of Calabar in terms of transportation facilities.
