FAAN Denies Responsibility for Uber's Exit from Nigeria

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has stated that it is not responsible for Uber's exit from the Nigerian market, attributing recent operational restrictions on e-hailing platforms to increasing passenger security threats and rider extortion. Olubunmi Kuku, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of FAAN, made these remarks during the second induction ceremony and unveiling of the Montage of Honorees by the Nigeria Aviation Hall of Fame in Lagos.

Kuku explained that reports of passenger intimidation and illegal fare inflation by some e-hailing drivers prompted FAAN to enforce stricter regulatory oversight. She noted that many drivers were undermining fair pricing and that FAAN had proposed dedicated pick-up zones, which the e-hailing platforms refused due to liability concerns.

Kuku emphasized that FAAN's priority is to ensure a safe and transparent passenger experience, countering claims that FAAN's policies led to Uber's withdrawal from Nigeria.
