Wike and Amaechi's Rivalry Intensifies Ahead of 2027 Elections

The political rivalry between former Rivers State governors Nyesom Wike and Rotimi Amaechi has escalated as the 2027 general elections approach. Wike, the immediate past governor of Rivers State and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, is backing President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.

Conversely, Amaechi, Wike's former ally and one-time boss, is Atiku Abubakar’s running mate for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential ticket. Their rivalry, ongoing for over a decade, has endured political party changes, elections, court battles, and political realignments.

On 5 September 2026, during a civic reception in Omagwa, Wike directly attacked Amaechi, suggesting he would encourage a boycott of the elections and doubting Amaechi's ability to win even in his hometown of Ubima. Wike dismissed the influence of security forces in the upcoming elections, stating that the people would come out to vote.

The ADC responded, accusing Wike of intimidation and asserting that elections are determined by votes counted by INEC, not by political boasts.
