Wike Backs Tinubu for 2027, Intensifies Attacks on Amaechi in Rivers

Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike publicly backed President Bola Tinubu's 2027 presidential campaign, stating that Rivers State voters will support the President's bid for another term. At a reception organised in his honour within Ikwerre Local Government Area on Saturday, Wike described Tinubu as a political ally and brother to Rivers people, pointing to federal appointments as proof of dedication to the state's concerns.
Wike seized the platform to direct criticism toward Rotimi Amaechi, the ADC candidate's vice-presidential running mate. Drawing on Amaechi's earlier remarks defining political brotherhood—rooted in action rather than kinship, emphasising responsiveness to constituents' needs and welfare—Wike contended that Amaechi no longer merits status as a dependable political associate.
Wike also forecast that Amaechi would instruct his backers to stay home from voting in 2027 after understanding his loss was inevitable in Rivers State. ADC leadership condemned the timing of Wike's gathering.
Felix Ekpendu, the party's chairman in Omuma Local Government Area, denounced Wike for organising the reception on the identical date when Amaechi's mother was interred, labelling this decision callous and intentionally inflammatory with respect to Amaechi's supporters. Ekpendu urged Wike against weaponising animosity in campaigning before 2027.
The public disagreement reveals intensifying strain between these two powerful Rivers politicians as the 2027 contest develops. Wike's backing of Tinubu represents alignment with the governing party and national leadership, whereas Amaechi has accepted an opposition ADC nomination.
Their feud stems from earlier political conflicts, notably Amaechi's choice to support former President Muhammadu Buhari rather than then-President Goodluck Jonathan during 2015—a matter Wike mentioned in his latest remarks.
