Wike, Fubara Meet in Port Harcourt as Rivers Political Tensions Ease

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike hosted Rivers Governor Siminalayi Fubara on Sunday in their first meeting since the governor withdrew from the 2027 governorship race.
At his Port Harcourt residence on Sunday evening, Nigeria's Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike hosted Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, marking an important juncture in their reconciliation efforts. Since Fubara withdrew from contention for a second term in 2027, this represents their first reported direct encounter—a development that follows extended strain between their respective political factions.
The gathering drew together prominent figures across Rivers' political sphere. Accompanying Wike were Kingsley Chinda, the All Progressives Congress' gubernatorial candidate, alongside Magnus Abe, who oversees Rainbow Coalition reconciliation initiatives.
Dr Sam Sam Jaja, formerly APC deputy national chairman, came with Fubara. Reports suggest that Chinda has secured Fubara's backing as his successor and that the governor has committed to the Rainbow Coalition's agenda.
Wike used the occasion to reflect on magnanimity in political life and how those in power should reciprocate community support. He emphasized that no politician reaches prominence alone and urged leaders to express appreciation through tangible gestures and aid distribution to their constituents.
According to Wike, sacrifice defines political engagement, and ambition pursued without generosity undermines public service. The two former allies' reconciliation comes after Rivers endured considerable turbulence—factional alignments destabilized institutions and deepened rifts across the state.
By stepping back from his gubernatorial ambitions, Fubara removed what had been a major obstacle to restored ties. The attendance of both APC members and coalition partners at this meeting points toward unified efforts to shape the political environment for elections coming in 2027.
