Windstorm in Yobe Kills Three, Causes Extensive Damage

A devastating windstorm struck Gashua, Yobe State, on Wednesday evening around 5:30 PM, lasting approximately 30 minutes. The storm resulted in the deaths of three individuals and caused extensive damage to hundreds of houses, shops, telecommunications masts, and electric poles, leaving many families homeless.

Aminu Muhammad, a 65-year-old resident, described the incident as one of the worst natural disasters to hit the town in recent memory. The storm was exacerbated by deforestation, which removed natural windbreaks, allowing strong winds to cause greater destruction.

Abdulhadi Ibrahim reported that the storm also damaged vehicles and solar panels. The Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (YOSEMA), led by Dr.

Ibrahim Muhammad Jalo, has commenced an assessment of the affected communities and is deploying emergency response teams. The chairman of the Bade Local Government Area, Ibrahim Babagana Yurema, confirmed the fatalities and injuries, emphasizing the urgent need for repairs and humanitarian assistance for displaced families.
