University of Ilorin Tops Nigeria in Research Quality Rankings

The University of Ilorin has been recognized as Nigeria's leading university in research quality according to the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, scoring 69.4%, the highest among Nigerian universities this year. The results were released on September 30, 2026, during the World Academic Summit at the University of Cape Town, South Africa.
A statement from the university's director of corporate affairs, Mr. Kunle Akogun, indicated that the ranking evaluates universities based on five pillars: teaching, research environment, research quality, international outlook, and industry. Prof. Suleiman Folorunso Ambali, the University Ranking Implementation Project Manager, stated that research quality is UNILORIN's strongest area, aiming for wider international recognition and to reach the 801–1000 band in future rankings.
The university has improved its position from the 1201–1500 band in 2026 to the 1001–1200 band globally, now ranking among seven Nigerian universities in the top 1,200. Vice Chancellor Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole praised the efforts of faculty and students contributing to this achievement.
