Atiku Abubakar Criticizes Nigeria's Response to Xenophobia

Atiku Abubakar, the former Vice President of Nigeria, condemned the Nigerian government's slow response to renewed xenophobic tensions in South Africa. He described the Tinubu administration's actions as sluggish and underwhelming, highlighting the urgent need for leadership.

In a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku noted that Ghana had demonstrated urgency by approving the evacuation of 300 distressed citizens. He criticized the Nigerian government for appearing hesitant and lacking decisiveness in protecting its citizens, especially as Nigeria is regarded as a leader in Africa.

Atiku called for the Nigerian government to issue robust travel advisories, arrange efficient evacuations, and engage diplomatically with South African authorities. He emphasized that Nigeria must not only react to crises but also lead in moments of continental challenges, urging the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to abandon its slow-footed approach and act with urgency.
