Edo Governor Okpebholo Pledges N41m for Returnees

Edo State Governor Mondai Okpebholo announced a pledge of N41 million to support 41 indigenes who were evacuated from South Africa due to xenophobic attacks. During a reception at the Festival Hall in Government House, Benin City, each returnee will receive N1 million within 24 hours.

The Edo State Government will also provide soft loans to help the returnees start businesses and reintegrate into society. Okpebholo emphasized the importance of rebuilding lives and restoring lost properties, stating that the government will continue to support people in distress to ensure they do not experience such hardships again.

He reflected on the historical ties between Nigeria and South Africa, noting Nigeria's previous support for South African businesses and the lack of retaliation despite the attacks. Rich Unubun expressed gratitude on behalf of the returnees, while Lucki Agazuma, Director General of the Edo State Migration Agency, commended the governor for his support.
