Nigeria's National Assembly Suspends Visits to South Africa

The National Assembly of Nigeria has officially suspended all visits to South Africa and announced a boycott of legislative activities organized or hosted by the country. This decision, communicated through a statement signed by the Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, was made in response to ongoing reports of xenophobic attacks against Nigerians and other African nationals.

The leadership of the National Assembly expressed deep concern over violence, intimidation, and property destruction targeting Nigerians, including reports of deaths, injuries, and displacement. The suspension applies to all official visits by lawmakers, National Assembly committees, officials, and staff, covering participation in various legislative programs.

The boycott will remain in effect until further notice. The National Assembly emphasized that this measure is not intended to undermine Nigeria-South Africa relations but is a strong expression of concern for the safety and welfare of Nigerians in South Africa.

They called on the South African government to take urgent action to protect foreign nationals.
