Yoruba Tennis Club Celebrates 100 Years with Jazz Festival

The Yoruba Tennis Club, founded in 1926, marked its 100th anniversary with a Centenary Jazz festival held at the club’s Greetings Hall in Lagos on Monday. The event featured cultural influences from Nigeria, Cuba, and Brazil, emphasizing the power of music in connecting diverse cultures.

Chief Olawumi Gasper, Chairman of the Yoruba Tennis Club, welcomed guests and stated that the festival was designed to celebrate the club's century-long history and the cultural connections fostered through jazz. He noted Cuba's significant contribution to Afro-Cuban jazz and Brazil's influence through the Bossa Nova movement.

The festival was attended by Mariam Morales Palmero, the Cuban Ambassador to Nigeria, who highlighted the shared Yoruba cultural heritage between Nigeria and Cuba. She described the occasion as significant for both the club's centenary and the enduring influence of African culture in Cuba and the Caribbean.

The event served as a platform to reflect on the historical ties between Nigeria and Cuba.
