Yoruba Tennis Club Celebrates 100 Years of Heritage

On Tuesday, during the centenary celebration of the Yoruba Tennis Club in Onikan, Lagos, Prof Peter Fatomilola delivered a lecture titled “Ayanmo (Destiny)” as part of the club's Centenary Cultural Week. He drew from Yoruba Ifa philosophy to discuss the concepts of destiny, individual responsibility, and communal life.

Fatomilola urged members to prioritize truth and integrity in their relationships and to actively transmit these values to younger generations. The event, themed “100 Years of Brotherhood, Culture and Continuity,” included a cultural colloquium that examined the club's history and values, highlighting its establishment as a response to racial discrimination faced by educated Nigerians during colonial rule.

A citation read by Dr Bayo Ayo noted that the club was founded by young Yoruba elites who were excluded from existing tennis clubs. The centenary was framed not just as a celebration of longevity but as a significant moment in the narrative of how an emerging African elite challenged colonial assumptions.
