Nigeria's Youth NGO Launches Gamified Plastic Challenge

U Recycl Initi Africa, recognized as Africa's largest youth-led environmental NGO, has officially relaunched the IAMPlasticW Challenge. This initiative introduces a first-of-its-kind gamified web application in Nigeria, designed to creatively equip university students with knowledge and innovative approaches to combat plastic pollution.

With over 400 million tons of plastic produced globally each year and less than 10% successfully recycled, plastic pollution has become one of the fastest-growing environmental challenges, particularly in rapidly urbanizing regions. The IAMPlasticW Challenge aims to educate communities about single-use plastic consumption patterns and supports universities in transitioning to a plastic-free circular economy.

The initiative focuses on deploying a range of social innovations across four Nigerian universities, encouraging students to adopt environmentally conscious practices, reduce excess plastic waste on campuses, influence behavior change, and address policy gaps that fuel pollution while advancing circular economy solutions to prevent tons of plastic waste from entering landfills and oceans.
