Lagos Urges Youths to Protect Oceans at YLSEP 2026
The Lagos State Government has called on youths to actively participate in protecting the ocean and coastal environment. This appeal was made by Dr. Mobalaji Gaji, Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, during the opening of the 2026 Young Leaders for Sustainable Environment Programme (YLSEP) on Monday in Lagos.
The programme, organized by Eko EnvironTalk, is themed “Ocean Heroes, Guardians of the Blue.” Dr. Gaji highlighted the critical role of Lagos’ lagoon, creeks, wetlands, and Atlantic shoreline in the state’s economy and climate resilience, while identifying threats such as plastic pollution, blocked waterways, and coastal erosion. He stated that government policies alone are insufficient for ocean protection and encouraged youths to become informed advocates for environmental management.
Mr. Lasisi Adedoyin, Convener of Eko EnvironTalk, echoed the importance of youth involvement in driving environmental change, noting the increasing pressure on Lagos’ waterways from pollution.
