Zimbabwe Achieves Milestone in Neuromodulation Therapy

On May 28 and 29, 2023, Zimbabwe recorded its first deep brain and spinal cord stimulation procedures, led by Zimbabwean neurosurgeon Nathaniel Zimani. The procedures were supported by a Chinese medical team, including chief surgeon Chen Yanliang from Xiangtan Central Hospital.
The patients involved remain in stable condition following post-operative monitoring. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a specialized procedure used to treat neurological and psychiatric conditions that often resist medication, such as Parkinson's disease, dystonia, drug-resistant epilepsy, and chronic pain, particularly in post-stroke complications.
DBS involves implanting electrodes in specific areas of the brain to regulate abnormal neural activity, while spinal cord stimulation (SCS) uses electrical impulses delivered to the spinal cord to relieve severe, persistent pain. This achievement marks a significant milestone for Zimbabwe, placing it among a small number of African countries capable of offering advanced neuromodulation therapies.
The technology was developed by Tsinghua University and commercialized by Beij Pin Medic, meeting international standards and expected to improve access to advanced neurological care in low- and middle-income countries.
