1980 AFCON Heroes Celebrate 46th Anniversary of Victory

The 1980 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) champions, the Green Eagles, celebrated the 46th anniversary of their historic victory on March 22, 1980, when they defeated Algeria 3-0 in the final held at the National Stadium in Lagos. Key players from the squad, including Segun Odegbami and Muda Lawal, reminisced about the triumph that reshaped Nigeria's football landscape.

Odegbami scored two goals in the final, while Lawal secured the historic win. Out of the original 22 squad members, only 12 remain alive to commemorate this milestone, which adds a bittersweet dimension to the celebration.

Felix Owolabi described the victory as a divine opportunity that united various ethnic groups in Nigeria, especially following the civil war. Sylvanus Okpala, who later assisted in coaching the Nigerian team to another AFCON victory in 2013, emphasized the sacrifices and determination required to achieve success.

The 1980 title remains a pinnacle in Nigeria's football history, alongside victories in 1994 and 2013.
