ASUU Authorizes Strike in 20 Universities Over Agreement

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has authorized its members in 20 universities across Nigeria to prepare for a strike due to the alleged failure of the Federal and state governments to implement the 2025 FGN-ASUU Agreement. This decision was made during the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held at the University of Abuja on August 8 and 9, 2026.

ASUU directed its branches to issue a 14-day ultimatum before commencing the strike. A statement signed by ASUU President, Prof.

Christopher Piwuna, indicated that an emergency NEC meeting would be convened at the end of August or early September 2026 to discuss further actions. The affected institutions include Nasarawa State University, Keffi; Ibrahim Babangida University, Lapai; and several others.

The union criticized the “haphazard implementation” of the agreement and the government's lack of urgency in releasing necessary funds, warning that these issues threaten the stability of Nigeria's university system.
