APC Female Deputy Governors Push for Six Female Governors

On a recent date, APC female deputy governors convened in Abuja, led by Ogun State Deputy Governor Noimot Salako-Oyediran, to discuss strategies for increasing female representation in Nigerian politics. They called on the party's national chairman, Prof.

Nentaw Yilwatda, to support the emergence of at least six female governors by the 2027 elections. The meeting included deputy governors from various states, such as Akwa Ibom, Imo, Plateau, and Rivers.

Salako-Oyediran highlighted the current dismal statistics regarding women's political participation, noting that only nine female deputy governors and four women senators exist in Nigeria, with overall female representation in elected offices at a mere 4.5%. The group proposed that the APC adopt a structural framework to ensure a minimum of 35% representation of women in state assemblies and at least one female senator per state.

They emphasized the importance of returning current female deputy governors for a second term and increasing women's appointments within the party's structure.
