Catholic Secretariat Urges Competence Over Religion in Elections

During a briefing on Friday at the conclusion of the 2026 Annual General Meeting of the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria’s Justice, Development and Peace Commission in Abuja, Rev. Fr.

Michael Ayanleke Banjo, the Secretary General, called on Nigerian voters to prioritize a candidate's ability to serve over their ethnic or religious background. Banjo criticized the practice of supporting candidates solely based on shared faith, questioning the effectiveness of such choices in ensuring good governance.

He posed a rhetorical question about the implications of voting for a Christian candidate who may not be capable of delivering results. Banjo emphasized the need for leaders who are honest, committed to the common good, and view leadership as a service rather than a self-serving position.

He urged Nigerians to seek out these qualities in candidates as they prepare for the elections.
