Nigerians Urged to Embrace Responsible Digital Citizenship

The Catch Them Young Community Initiative (CATYCOI) has called on Nigerians, especially the electorate, social media handlers, bloggers, content creators, and online influencers, to embrace responsible digital citizenship by adopting the #CheckBeforeYouPost and #FactCheck campaigns in preparation for the 2027 general elections. Executive Director Nonso Orakwe addressed a group of youths in Awka, Anambra State, highlighting that misinformation, disinformation, and hate speech pose significant threats to Nigeria's democracy, electoral integrity, national unity, and peaceful coexistence.

Orakwe warned that the careless spread of false information can mislead the public, incite violence, and undermine trust in democratic institutions. He urged Nigerians to verify information before sharing it and called on political parties, candidates, and media practitioners to conduct issue-based campaigns while rejecting fake news and inflammatory rhetoric.

Orakwe emphasized the importance of relying on credible sources and supporting independent fact-checking initiatives to maintain peace and stability in the nation.
