INEC Commits to Ensuring Every Vote Counts in 2027

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that every vote counts in the upcoming 2027 general elections. Magdalyn Aku, the Assistant Director of Voter Education and Planning at INEC, stated this during the 2026 News Agency of Nigeria and Nigeria Union of Journalists Democracy Roundtable held in Abuja.

The roundtable, themed “Making Nigerians’ Vote Count in 2027: The Role of INEC,” emphasized that making every vote count is central to INEC's mandate. Aku highlighted the commission's neutrality and focus on protecting voter rights rather than determining election outcomes.

She noted improvements in election management, including the transition from Smart Card Readers to the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System and the use of the INEC Result Viewing Portal for real-time results transmission. Aku also stressed the importance of inclusivity and urged Nigerians to reject vote-buying.

Grace Ike, the NUJ FCT Chairman, emphasized that credible elections require collective responsibility from all stakeholders, including journalists and civil society.
