CAN Urges Politicians to Keep Jesus Out of Politics

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has issued a warning to politicians and their supporters to refrain from invoking the name of Jesus Christ in political battles as Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections. CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, made this statement following comments by Precious Oruche, known as Mama Pee, who referenced Jesus while discussing former Anambra State governor Peter Obi.

Okoh stressed that Jesus should not be treated as a political candidate or weapon for advancing political interests. He acknowledged the freedom to support or criticize any political candidate, including Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, and President Bola Tinubu, but urged that political loyalty should not diminish the reverence due to Christ.

Okoh called for electoral conversations to focus on competence, character, policies, and the future of Nigeria, rather than religiously charged rhetoric. He concluded by emphasizing that no politician is the Messiah and that no electoral victory is worth compromising the honor due to Jesus Christ.
