INEC Warns Non-Transparent Primaries Threaten 2027 Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued a warning regarding the potential risks posed by non-transparent primaries to public trust and the stability of the electoral process as Nigeria approaches the 2027 elections. INEC Chairman, Prof.

Joash Amupitan, made this disclosure during a three-day technical review workshop in Uyo, organized in collaboration with the Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD). The workshop aimed to refine regulatory guidelines for political parties in light of the recently enacted Electoral Act 2026.

The commission has set the primary election schedule for April 23 to May 30, 2026, and emphasized that the quality of internal party democracy directly impacts electoral conduct. Amupitan highlighted the need for stricter compliance with the 2026 guidelines, which include provisions for financial transparency and inclusivity for women, youth, and persons with disabilities.

He also noted that the commission would remain neutral and enforce compliance firmly.
