Afenifere Diaspora Calls for Free Elections in 2027

Afenifere Diaspora, through its chairman Sikiru Fadairo and secretary David Adenekan, issued a statement on Friday stressing that only credible elections can deepen democracy in Nigeria as the country approaches the 2027 general elections. They highlighted the importance of ensuring free and fair elections, which they consider essential for good governance.

The group called for the mandatory electronic transmission of election results in real-time to enhance transparency and credibility in the electoral process. They raised concerns about the deteriorating security situation across Nigeria, particularly citing recent attacks by terrorist groups, including the Islamic State West Africa Province and Ansaru, which have severely affected communities in the northeast.

The statement referenced coordinated attacks in Borno State, resulting in the deaths of military personnel and the abduction of hundreds of individuals. Afenifere Diaspora urged the Nigerian government and the international community to remain vigilant and committed to defending democracy, emphasizing that credible elections are crucial to restoring public confidence.
