Melaye: Obi's Regional Status Hinders Presidential Bid

During an appearance on the KAA Truths podcast on Thursday, Dino Melaye, a former lawmaker representing Kogi West Senatorial District, asserted that Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress, cannot become Nigeria's president because he is a "regional champion." Melaye emphasized that no regional champion can ascend to the presidency in Nigeria. He characterized Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate for the African Democratic Congress, as a nationalist, which he believes is essential for presidential success.

Melaye acknowledged that his comments might be perceived as awkward or offensive but insisted they reflect his assessment of the political landscape in Nigeria. He cited the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo as an example of a brilliant leader whose regional political identity hindered his presidential ambitions, stating that Awolowo could only secure significant support in the Southwest.
