Makinde Declares He Won't Step Down in 2027 Elections

On Friday, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State declared in his bi-monthly newsletter that he will not step down for any presidential candidate in the upcoming 2027 general elections. Makinde stated that his entry into the presidential race is not a maneuver to negotiate with other candidates, asserting, “I am going forward.” He emphasized that Nigerians deserve better governance, which includes institutions that prioritize the law over political interests, a rewarding economy, and communities free from fear of abduction.

Makinde acknowledged the significant political forces opposing him and the perception that the ruling party's machinery has predetermined the election outcome. However, he referenced his governance in Oyo State as evidence that effective, people-centered governance is achievable, despite not having resolved every issue.

He reiterated his commitment to advancing his presidential campaign without the intention of stepping down for another candidate.
