Sultan of Sokoto Calls for Respect in Political Discourse

On Monday, the Sultan of Sokoto received Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), along with his running mate, Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, and the party’s Sokoto State governorship candidate, Dr Shamsu Haido, at his palace in Sokoto. During the meeting, the Sultan advised politicians and their supporters to respect one another and uphold national unity, urging them to avoid abusive language and actions that could incite violence.

He acknowledged the right of politicians to present their policies but stressed the need for respect towards differing political views. The Sultan emphasized that politics should not be a tool for division and that the peace and interests of Nigeria should take precedence over political differences.

He called on political leaders, especially those seeking public office, to lead by example and ensure their campaigns do not foster conflict. Peter Obi expressed gratitude to the Sultan for the audience and the opportunity to engage in political consultations with traditional leaders.
