Tinubu's Government to Uphold INEC's Autonomy for 2027

On Wednesday, Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, stated that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration would not interfere with the legal autonomy of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in preparation for the 2027 general elections. Akume emphasized the Federal Government's commitment to constitutional democracy, the rule of law, and multi-party politics, dismissing claims that the administration aims for a one-party state.

He assured that all political parties and candidates would retain their constitutional rights to organize, campaign, and seek voter support. This statement followed discussions between President Tinubu and the leadership of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) regarding the nation's democratic process.

Akume reiterated that the government would protect democratic institutions and respect the independence of constitutionally established bodies, affirming that 21 political parties registered by INEC demonstrate political pluralism in Nigeria. He also noted the professionalism of security agencies during elections under international scrutiny.
