MCE Shortlists Seven Parties for 2027 Election Coalition

Ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Movement for Credible Elections (MCE) has initiated efforts to form a broad opposition coalition capable of presenting a consensus presidential candidate. The MCE's Political Commission, chaired by Prof. Pat Utomi, has shortlisted seven opposition political parties and their presidential candidates for further discussions and potential endorsement.

This review process has been ongoing since July, focusing on the profiles, ideologies, and electoral programs of various contenders. A press conference is scheduled for next week to formally announce the shortlisted parties and candidates, along with the commission's work plan and coalition-building modalities.

The coalition aims to avoid past challenges faced by opposition alliances and is based on a power-sharing model. A legally binding Memorandum of Understanding is expected to be signed by November 2026.

The MCE is also engaging external stakeholders, including G-100 Nigerians, to enhance inclusivity in the coalition-building process.
