Utomi's Commission to Discuss Opposition Coalition for 2027

The Movement for Credible Elections (MCE) announced that the Prof Pat Utomi-led Political Commission will hold closed-door meetings with selected opposition presidential candidates and their party leaders to form a coalition for the 2027 general elections. The meetings are scheduled to take place in Ibadan in a fortnight.

The parties invited include the Social Democratic Party (SDP), African Democratic Congress (ADC), Allied People’s Movement (APM), National Democratic Congress (NDC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Accord Party, People’s Redemption Party (PRP), African Action Congress (AAC), and Young Progressive Party (YPP). MCE aims to protect the coalition negotiations from “political mercenaries and jobbers” and will establish rules for selecting a consensus presidential candidate.

The coalition's success will depend on the credibility of the selection process and the commitment of all parties to agreed rules. The coalition will also address national issues such as insecurity, economic hardship, and electoral integrity, aiming to create a sustainable democratic alternative for Nigeria.
