Kila Urges Opposition Unity for 2027 Elections in Nigeria

Professor Anthony Kila, a prominent figure in the G100 coalition, stated that the movement aims to strengthen democratic institutions and ensure good governance and accountability in Nigeria. He warned opposition leaders that it is unrealistic to believe they can win the upcoming 2027 general elections without forming coalitions, citing historical examples where successful elections were achieved through collaboration.

Kila referenced the formation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2013, which defeated the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2015 elections, and the coalition that led to the PDP's victory over the APC in the 2019 Oyo State governorship election. He challenged the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), who have expressed intentions to contest independently, to reconsider their stance for the sake of institutional integrity.

Kila emphasized the importance of a viable opposition and warned that a fragmented opposition could lead to complacency in governance. He is also looking beyond the 2027 elections, advocating for strong institutions as the foundation of democracy.
