Opposition Coalition Forms Ahead of 2027 Elections

On August 31, 2026, opposition parties in Nigeria will gather at the Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja, aiming to unite against President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the upcoming 2027 elections. The coalition, known as G100, is led by Salihu Lukman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Lukman expressed concerns about the divisions among opposition parties, which previously allowed Tinubu to win the 2023 election with less than 37 percent of the vote. In that election, Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi split the opposition vote, capturing over 54 percent collectively.

Political analysts, including Dr. Mubarak Jamiu, emphasize that no single opposition party can win the presidency independently. Donald Duke, the PRP presidential candidate, and Seyi Makinde, the APM presidential candidate, echoed the need for a united front.

Despite these warnings, personal ambitions within the opposition threaten the coalition's success, reminiscent of past failed attempts to unite against the ruling party.
