Arewa Elders Urge Tinubu to Account for His Past

The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) issued a warning to President Bola Tinubu and other politicians aiming for elective office in 2027, stating they must be ready to account for their past. Prof. Tukur Baba, the Publicity Secretary of the ACF, emphasized that voters have the right to scrutinize candidates' educational backgrounds, integrity, and personal histories.

Speaking on Arise Television’s Morning Show, Baba asserted that the credibility and consistency of a candidate's story are more important than merely possessing required certificates. He acknowledged that while the 1999 Constitution does not mandate comprehensive documentary evidence of educational history for presidential candidates, this should not deter Nigerians from questioning candidates' backgrounds.

Baba compared Nigeria's political system to those in countries like China, where leaders undergo rigorous assessments before attaining high office. He noted that Nigeria lacks a strong culture of accountability, often compromising political standards.

Ultimately, he stated that ordinary Nigerians prioritize the practical impacts of governance over mere qualifications.
