Reno Omokri Claims ₦3,000 Suffices for Daily Living in Nigeria

Reno Omokri, Nigeria’s Ambassador-designate to Mexico, asserted that ₦3,000 can sustain the average Nigerian for a day during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics. He discussed the rising cost of living and international poverty standards, emphasizing that poverty assessments must consider each country's economic realities.

Omokri recounted a market survey he conducted with a journalist, where he evaluated the prices of essential items like yam, rice, maize, and fruits. He concluded that ₦3,000 is adequate for daily needs in Nigeria, but would be insufficient in the United States due to differing living costs.

He criticized the World Bank’s global poverty benchmark, arguing that international standards should not be applied without considering local economic conditions. Omokri highlighted that the global benchmark of living on less than $2 a day does not accurately reflect the actual cost of living in Nigeria.
