Anambra Declares August 22, 2026, Sanitation Day

The Anambra State Government has announced that Saturday, August 22, 2026, will be observed as a compulsory environmental sanitation day in celebration of the state's 35th anniversary. Dr Clem Aguiyi, the Commissioner for Environment, communicated this directive in a statement issued to journalists in Awka on Tuesday.

He stated that movement across the state will be restricted from 7am to 10am on the sanitation day, although individuals engaged in emergency and essential duties will be exempt from this restriction. In preparation for the anniversary, Aguiyi instructed all markets in the state to conduct thorough cleaning exercises on Thursday, August 20, and Friday, August 21.

He urged Local Government Area chairmen and Presidents-General of communities to ensure compliance with the sanitation directive and facilitate the evacuation of waste generated during the cleaning exercises. Aguiyi emphasized the importance of community participation in maintaining a clean and healthy environment as Anambra commemorates its anniversary.
