Four Police Officers Arrested for Extorting ICPC Chairman

Four police officers from the FCT Police Command were arrested for allegedly extorting N53,000 from Dr. Musa Aliyu, the chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC). The incident occurred during an unauthorized stop-and-search operation in the Banex area of Wuse, Abuja.

According to a press statement from ICPC spokesperson John Odei, the officers abandoned their assigned duties to set up an unauthorized checkpoint where they extorted the money from Dr. Aliyu. The officers compelled him to withdraw the amount from a point-of-sale terminal, which they later shared among themselves.

CP AHM Sanusi stated that the officers' actions constituted a criminal act, and he emphasized that they would face severe punishment, including dismissal from the police force. The Inspector General of Police, IGP Tunji Disu, has prohibited indiscriminate searches of citizens by police officers.
