75-Year-Old Man Sentenced to 10 Years for Defiling Minor

Promis Chukwumatti, a 75-year-old man, was sentenced to ten years in prison without the option of a fine for defiling an 11-year-old girl. The judgment was delivered by Justice Rita Oguguo at the Rivers State Family Court in Port Harcourt.

The court found that Chukwumatti had committed the offense of carnal knowledge of a minor, supported by oral confessions and evidence presented during the trial. The court ordered Chukwumatti to pay N1 million as compensation to the victim's family.

Justice Oguguo noted the severity of the crime, emphasizing that it warranted a significant sentence despite the convict's plea for leniency. The court also issued a restraining order against Chukwumatti's family to prevent them from approaching the victim's family.

Precious Ordu, the prosecuting counsel from the Rivers State Ministry of Justice, commended the judgment, stating it serves as a deterrent to others who might engage in similar crimes.
