75-Year-Old Susan Gasson Benefits from Lung Cancer Trial

Susan Gasson, a 75-year-old resident of Greenwich, south-east London, was diagnosed with lung cancer after experiencing a persistent cough that began in 2020. This marked her fourth cancer diagnosis over four decades, having previously battled breast, cervical, and thyroid cancers.

Following surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy for her lung cancer, Gasson was offered a place in a clinical trial due to a HER2 gene mutation in her tumor. Since joining the trial, she takes one tablet daily and undergoes CT scans every six weeks.

Gasson reported that her tumor has shrunk significantly, and she has not required further chemotherapy, allowing her to enjoy a better quality of life. Much of her treatment has been conducted at the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, which noted the absence of targeted treatments for lung cancer patients with HER2 mutations prior to this trial.

Gasson expressed gratitude for her continued health, stating, “I feel lucky to still be here,” as she enjoys watching her grandchildren grow up.
