Disability Commission Launches Assistive Devices Program

The Disability Commission, under the leadership of executive secretary Ayuba Gufwam, is targeting 562 children in a new assistive devices program aimed at enhancing mobility and independence. During the handover of devices to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital (UATH), Gufwam emphasized a shift from ad-hoc distribution to a coordinated system that ensures beneficiaries receive appropriate equipment and support.

He outlined the commission's focus on strengthening assistive technology services, including assessment, prescription, fitting, training, follow-up, and maintenance. Gufwam stated that the success of the initiative would be measured by the impact on beneficiaries rather than the number of devices distributed.

He urged hospitals to ensure proper allocation and user education and called for UATH to appoint a focal person for liaising with the commission regarding the utilization and maintenance of the devices. The initiative is supported by the ECOWAS Commission as part of a regional intervention.
