83 Nigerians Arrive Home From South Africa Amid Xenophobic Violence

Another batch of Nigerian returnees landed in Lagos after fleeing xenophobic attacks in South Africa, bringing total repatriations to 1,476.

Wednesday evening saw 83 Nigerians land at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, fleeing South Africa's escalating anti-foreigner violence. The returnees flew aboard South African Airways from Johannesburg's Oliver Tambo International Airport.

Safety and welfare during transit were ensured by two Consulate-General officials from Nigeria's Johannesburg mission who traveled alongside them. This contingent forms part of a broader wave of departures occurring throughout recent months.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reports that these 83 arrivals raise the total tally of Nigerians repatriated from South Africa owing to xenophobic and Afrophobic attacks to 1,476 persons. Governmental coordination combined with backing from philanthropic donors—who financed airfare for those lacking means—has made repatriation feasible.

Evacuation logistics were orchestrated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, whose spokesman made the details public through official statements. Departing at 3:35 p.m. from Johannesburg, the aircraft completed its passage to Lagos in time for an 8:45 p.m. landing that day.

Described as "good-spirited" benefactors, private citizens furnished essential funds enabling the returnees' exit from South Africa. Worsening conditions for Nigerians and other continental nationals in South Africa—where xenophobic violence has grown worse recently—are highlighted by these continuing movements.

Before receiving this latest group, prior evacuation operations had transported 1,393 nationals back home, revealing how extensive and mounting the exodus has grown. Protecting those living in danger abroad constitutes a key pledge the Nigerian government has made while overseeing repatriation logistics.
