Nigeria's Need for Legal Framework on Geographical Indications

The article examines the importance of establishing a coherent legal framework in Nigeria for the protection of Geographical Indications (GIs) and Appellations of Origin (AOs). It highlights that many indigenous products, such as Ijebu Garri, Ofada Rice, Kilishi, Benue Yam, Nsukka Yellow Pepper, Adire, Akwete Cloth, and Kano Leather, are at risk of imitation and exploitation due to inadequate legal protections.

These products are culturally significant and economically valuable, yet they often lack the necessary legal safeguards to ensure that the communities that create them benefit from their unique qualities. The article argues that the existing legal environment is fragmented and insufficient, necessitating legislative reform to provide meaningful protection for these products.

It emphasizes that preserving geographical identity is crucial for maintaining economic ownership and that the global recognition of indigenous products as valuable assets underscores the need for stronger legal mechanisms.
