AAC Attacks Court Order Revoking Sowore's Bail as Political Move

Federal High Court revoked Omoyele Sowore's bail for missing trial dates on cybercrime charges. His party calls the decision politically motivated.

The African Action Congress has mounted a strong attack on a Federal High Court decision to revoke the bail of Omoyele Sowore, its presidential candidate for 2027. Justice Muhammad Umar of the Federal High Court in Abuja issued the bail cancellation after Sowore failed to appear for scheduled trial hearings on alleged cybercrime-related offences.

A bench warrant has been issued for his arrest. The Oyo State chapter of the AAC, led by chairman Kayode Babayomi, rejected the court's action, saying it was driven by political motivation rather than judicial principle.

The party alleged that Justice Umar deliberately scheduled court dates on occasions when Sowore would be unable to attend. According to the AAC's statement, Sowore made an appearance on June 15 at an earlier scheduled date, but the judge did not sit that day, undermining the party's claim that the activist had demonstrated willingness to participate in proceedings.

Beyond the immediate legal battle, the AAC's national leadership has framed the bail revocation as part of a wider campaign of political intimidation. The party announced plans to mobilise supporters nationwide and organise mass protests in response.

National chairman Samuel Ajeigbe and the party's 2027 campaign leadership issued a statement reaffirming their commitment to Sowore's candidacy, signalling that the legal challenges will not deter the movement's electoral plans. The case emerges against a backdrop of tensions between the AAC and the federal judiciary over how Sowore's trial has been managed.

The party's accusations of deliberate scheduling remain unverified in court filings, but the string of missed court dates has provided the legal basis for the bail revocation. Sowore, a known activist and former presidential candidate in 2019, has maintained a public profile despite facing multiple legal proceedings over recent years.
