Abuja Faces Infrastructure Crisis Amid Rapid Growth

Abuja is experiencing significant population growth, which is placing immense pressure on its infrastructure originally designed for a smaller population. Recent flooding in areas such as Airport Road, Lugbe, Lokogoma, and Wuse Garki has highlighted these challenges.

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), under Minister Nyesom Wike, has initiated a comprehensive investigation into the affected areas. A technical team led by Richard Yunan Dauda, Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), is conducting assessments to identify the causes of flooding, distinguishing between natural and human-induced factors.

The rapid expansion of the city, driven by migration and economic opportunities, has led to overstretched roads, drainage systems, and public services. Illegal developments, such as structures on waterways and obstruction of drainage channels, further exacerbate these issues.

The FCTA aims to restore the integrity of the Abuja Master Plan as part of its reform efforts to address these pressing infrastructure challenges.
