Accord Party Seeks EU Help Amid Osun Election Tensions

On August 12, 2026, Accord Party, led by National Chairman Chief Maxwell Mgbudem, appealed to the European Union (EU) for urgent diplomatic intervention to mitigate escalating political tensions in Osun State ahead of the governorship election scheduled for August 15. The party expressed concerns over alleged electoral violence, intimidation, and the misuse of state institutions, claiming at least 29 fatalities and numerous injuries linked to the political climate.

Accord reported over 60 of its members had been arrested in Abuja and Nasarawa State, demanding clarification on these detentions. The party also highlighted the searches and arrests of senior Osun State officials, including the Secretary to the State Government, and the freezing of state government bank accounts by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Although these accounts were later unfrozen, Accord warned that such actions could undermine public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic processes. The party also called for the arrest of Senator Francis Adenigba Fadahunsi for allegedly inciting violence against Accord members.
